You open up your CD drive. You put your brand-new software disc inside. You close the drive. You wait. And you wait. And you wait. Why isn’t the software loading? Software issues are a common occurrence for computer users. If the problem isn’t a malfunctioning computer, though, you can usually determine why the software isn’t complying by observing five simple steps.
- Check the disc itself. Compact discs are infamous for becoming scratched or otherwise easily damaged. The manufacturer can scratch discs before packaging or the packaging material itself could have worn on the disc. Most drives cannot read excessively scratched or damaged discs. Your fingerprints can also hinder the ability of drives to read a disc. Try buying a disc cleaning kit if you believe it’s a physical problem.
- Verify your available computer space. If your computer is too full and the software requires more space than you have to offer, the software won’t load. If you are running other programs, they could be slowing down your computer. Thoroughly clean your system, close out all applications, and try to load again.
- Compare the system requirements to your system. If you are running an operating system not supported by the software, it won’t load. Even if you are running an older version of the correct operating system, the software may not work. The software should come with system requirements written on the packaging.
- Confirm the serial number. Many software programs require the user to enter a unique serial number in order for the software to load. If you have entered that number and the software still will not load, try re-entering in case you typed it incorrectly. Check to see if your caps lock is engaged.
- Look into software updates or patches. Manufacturers post updates and patches for software if necessary. Your version may need to be updated or patched before it can operate. These patches can be found on manufacturer websites.
If these five steps do not pinpoint the problem, it is more than likely that your computer or computer drive is broken.
