Cats and Computers

Cats have invaded the internet and computer use both figuratively and literally. Cats love to see what is on the screen, try to catch the cursor, and to help their owner type messages such as kmbbbcfgi8c7d to their boss in business emails. In the world of the internet cats have inspired such phenomena as LOLcats and amazing amounts of videos on YouTube. They have also inspired the creation of items to protect your computer from feline hacking. One example of such product is Pawsense at www.bitboost.com/pawsense which helps to block cat typing. Another concept recently created was the Kitty Keyboard Kover at www.kittykeyboardkover.com to help prevent kitty from trying to doze on your keyboard as you type. A similar idea of placing items on your desk to redirect where kitty wants to lay down is the Refined Feline Kitt-In Box at www.therefinedfeline.com/kitinbox-cat-perch.htm which gives kitty a place to stay close to you while you work but not on your papers, keyboard, printer or other inconvenient places.

Cats have even inspired scientists to develop computers to resemble the feline brain. In early 2010 Wei Lu, a computer engineer at the University of Michigan, began research on developing a computer that can operate as fast as the brain of a cat. According to an article at http://ur.umich.edu/0910/Apr26_10/1085-cat-brain-a on the University of Michigan’s website it states that a supercomputer has 140,000 central processing units and its own dedicated power supply. Yet, when compared to the feline brain it still is 83 times slower in its performance. Go Mr. Kitty!

As time goes by cat lovers will continue to try to make their world work in harmony with their feline counterparts. As this occurs cats will continue to try to figure out how the paper comes out of the printer and the best sleeping position on the keyboard.
