Automating a Life

We all know that things are easier when we do not need to think about (or remember to get around to actually doing) them. Unfortunately, there are all sorts of passive barriers which we put in place, so that we end up not doing what we swear up and down that we “should” be doing. Computers, however, have given us a very fun little weapon in the fight against the worst uses of our psychology. This weapon is easy, accessible automation for the common person. Whereas only a few decades ago, getting something to be done at a certain interval would have required the hiring of a person who was fastidious about such things (and still subject to human error), now almost anybody can do things like that with only a few clicks of the keys.

You can pretty much automate anything and everything in your life. You can schedule someone to come and mow your lawn for you every x number of days. You can schedule pretty much all of your bills to be paid, even if you got hit by a bus or had some other tragic event happen to you. And once something like that is set up, all you have to remember in the future is to make sure you have enough money in your accounts to cover the things you have automated.

This may not sound like too much, but it frees up all sorts of time for you to do better things in your life. When you think defensively, you act defensively. But as they say in football, the best defense is a great offense. Or maybe they say that the best defense is having a robot take care of your problems for you. That could be an interesting playbook. But at any rate, once you have a computer which can go online, you have the power to make your bills essentially pay themselves, so you can stop worrying.
