No one ever thinks of it, but what happens when someone steals your laptop? Sure, the concept of it happening is a slim one, unless you have a burglar break into your house and actually steal your electronics right out from under your nose. While insurance might cover your assets, what about your important documents, pictures, and other things? Those can’t be replaced. It’s a big deal losing your laptop! It can easily happen.
Luckily, you have an “eagle eye” keeping watch, very much like a state-of-the-art science fiction technology of actually tracking the location of your very own laptop, wherever it is. The best part of all that? One or possibly more of these three programs available for laptop tracking are completely free.
The first program is called “Prey” from www.Prey.com. It’s an open source code for the program that’s easy to install and allows the user on their desktop remote access to their laptop with wireless location programming and webcam usage to actually see where the laptop actually is! It’s pretty fantastic, sort of like spy stuff.
Another program is “Adeona” from Adeona.cs.Washington.Edu, probably one of the most famous professional programs designed to locate your stolen or missing laptop. It has similar features to the “Prey,” but there is also word of the program working with iPhones and other mobile phones compatible with certain computer programs.
There is then the “Firefound” from Firefound.com which allows full remote access of your laptop, so complete and comprehensive that you can actually physically remotely remove important files–bank account information, PayPal numbers, personal photos–off of your missing or stolen laptop to keep criminals from using them. It features all the standard tracking as well.
There are more out there as well. Who would’ve thought there was such a heavy field of available software out there to protect your electronics equipment?
